Ebook About After his father’s death Lord Magnus Dawson has more important things to think about than falling in love—like how to earn a living when all he knows is the idleness he was raised with, and the military training he received before selling his commission. For Toby Marsh, the impetus is as great, though he doesn’t have Magnus’s family connections to fall back on. A scholarship student at Cambridge, he was forced to spend his last year in college as valet and sometime tutor to a brainless fellow student after his father’s sudden death. Now he scrabbles out a living as a freelance tutor. Then a call from the Foreign Office brings them together. Toby disdains the idle lordling, and Magnus can’t seem to treat Toby as more than a servant. As they delve deeper into their assignment, the attraction between them grows. But can they envision a future together when class and culture conspire to drive them apart? The Gentleman and the Spy is an 83,000 word Victorian-era lord and valet romance with a country house party and a touch of espionage and international intrigue.Book The Gentleman and the Spy Review :
I was enjoying the book as another generic gay romance novels in the Regency era, nothing special but still generally enjoyable -- until one of the last chapters. I read this genre frequently for a brain vacation and enjoy them; I am realistic about what to expect; I have never written an amazon review of any romance book; and still, I was so angry and shocked at this totally weird and inappropriate ending that I am writing this review to warn off others.I apologize for spoilers, but y'all should know: one of the main characters had a memory of being tied with rope to his own bed posts by his drunk roommate, in order to let a friend anally rape him, dry and brutally. While this memory is the norm for many of these books (a character overcomes trauma with his gentle new lover), the book ends with a scene in which the rape-abetting roommate finds him after a few years and apologizes -- and the main character that was tied down and raped then FORGIVES HIM within thirty seconds, saying, direct quote: "I forgive you what you did. [He] is a beast but you were drunk." And then plans on getting beers with him as friends. My mouth dropped. It is the absolutely worst scene in any of these books I've ever read. This man tied him down to be raped -- the idea that the main character would instantly forgive him, smile at him, get beers with him -- is effing APPALLING. The author did this as a plot device to show that "if this man can change, so can my love interest." As though all it took was an apology (which, all the apology was "I was a bastard. I tried to find a way to apologize. I was horrified. We'd been drinking and he was complaining about not finding a wench to bed and he suggested you." That was it. That was the apology that led the main character to forgive him for TYING HIM DOWN TO A BED POST TO BE RAPED and become friends again) and then the main character could just get over the rape and be merrily pals again.Do not read this book and support this author. I think this author should learn from her mistakes, create a new pen name, and write books that are not horribly upsetting and promote the idea that being drunk makes you less accountable for rape and that rapists only need apologize and then the friendship can resume. I see where he was coming from and what he was attempting to do, but man, did he miss the mark COMPLETELY. An apology a years later, a rather half-hearted apology at that, for having aided in the rape of the main character and suddenly all was forgiven and the trauma of the rape simply disappeared. This is not believable but does manage to be offensive. I have enjoyed this author's work in the past and have no clue what he was thinking when he wrote this. But I advise not reading it.
